Carina Ojoko is a Lagos based film Makeup artist with a specialty in Makeup effects also known as prosthetic or special effects makeup. Carina hails from Anambra state and she is a graduate of Ebonyi State University from the Department of Applied Biology.
Her journey into film and entertainment started during her final year in school when she started to think about her future and what she would want it to be like. And there in her room in school she decided to pursue film makeup and special effects.
In Carina words “My first step was to move to Lagos as I knew this is where I would be happy to start my career. I love Lagos because of how easy it is to make connections and once I was able to get one leg in the door, everything I had hoped and wondered how, became possible.”
The journey obviously hasn’t been easy for Carina. She has had several challenges like getting the professional products being used to create these effects, having the financial support to buy these materials or learning some of the advanced aspects of makeup or getting the right support and connection needed to make her mark in the industry. But everyday she keeps learning and being hopeful to make a difference. And to be her very best.
During the course of her journey she has been very opportune to work with amazing producers, actors, directors and crew. Some of the movies she has worked on include the most recent; The Netflix original series “Blood Sisters” where she worked as the special effects supervisor on the set.
Carina recently concluded a project with Greoh studios “Brotherhood” where she was the lead artist for makeup/hair and effects. Another is a movie from anakle films shot in 2021 {yet to be released} it’s called “Black Book” and she’s very excited about it .
She also worked on “Rattlesnake (the Ahanna story)” which got her a nomination on the recently concluded AMVCA8 for Best makeup. The movie also won a couple of awards from its nominations. Carina have also had other awards like the Eko Star and TV Film Awards. Other movies include ” Sugar Rush, Prophetess, MTV Shuga, etc.
It’s been a lot of learning experience and Carina Ojoko is still learning and getting better at her craft. She wants anyone who has a career path they want to follow to please be consistent, be patient, be realistic and have a habit of introducing yourself. Carina says these did a lot for her while she was starting out her journey. Persistence sure goes a long way, so let’s persist till we achieve our goals.
