Mayokun Adeleye is a spoken word artist, a podcaster and an ecopreneur, resident in Nigeria. She works at the intersection of art, environmental sustainability and the circular economy. Amongst other themes, her work as a poet is focused on perpetuating awareness about the waste crisis and inciting change by redesign. Mayokun is an emerging storyteller propelled by the need to spread authentic narratives on disruptive solutions that address a global problem.
As a podcaster, she holds conversations on the importance of waste management and encourages her listeners to perceive waste as a resource. Her reference point is the Bible which says to replenish (renew) the earth. Therefore, she uses this to substantiate the responsibility of human beings to sustain their environments.
Mayokun co-founded an eco-friendly fashion brand, Root Culture, in June, 2022. The business adopts a circular model that transforms previously owned denims. Which would normally be burned or dumped in a landfill, into functional fashion items like the tote bag.

“My goal is to educate as many youths as possible, using diverse forms of creative arts, about waste management and its potential to alleviate poverty and enhance employment opportunities. I hope to build a sustainable art space in the future for artists/creatives to share authentic African stories using eco-friendly resources.” says Mayokun.
Currently, she’s working with some designers in the fashion space on projects that would help tackle textile waste in the environment. Mayokun Adeleye believes the waste management sector is a diamond in the rough that needs to be explored urgently.
